Sicilian Cookies: Traditional, Authentic and Handmade
Sicily, a land shaped by cultural encounters and millenary influences, boasts one of the richest and most diverse confectionery traditions in Italy. In particular, the city of Messina, where our coffee roastery was founded, preserves historic recipes that are still passed down today in homes, pastry shops and artisan bakeries.
In this article, we invite you to discover three traditional Sicilian cookies that capture the essence of the island: Piparelli, Nzuddi and Ciambelline (also called Cuddureddi).
Piparelli Messinesi: Crunchy Sicilian Cookies with Honey and Almonds
Piparelli are among the most iconic and recognizable Messina cookies. Their elongated, slender shape and crunchy yet crumbly texture make them unique. They are prepared with whole almonds, honey, flour and a fragrant mix of cinnamon and nutmeg.
The double baking process is what gives them their distinctive crunch: first the dough is baked as a loaf, then sliced and baked again.
These authentic Sicilian cookies have deep historical roots. The name “Piparelli” is thought to come from the Sicilian word pipa (“whistle” or “blow”), referring to the sound made by the old wood-fired ovens before gas and electric ovens were introduced.
Traditionally enjoyed with sweet wines such as Moscato di Pantelleria or Malvasia delle Lipari, today Piparelli are also perfect as Sicilian biscuits to dip into tea or coffee.
Our handmade Piparelli cookies, prepared in Messina following the traditional recipe, preserve the same authentic flavor cherished for generations.
Nzuddi: Traditional Sicilian Cookies of Celebration
Among the most beloved traditional Sicilian cookies, Nzuddi tell a story intertwined with faith and solidarity. In Catania, they are prepared for All Souls’ Day, while in Messina they are linked to the celebration of the Madonna della Lettera on June 3rd.
The name comes from the dialect diminutive of Vincenzo, Vincinzuddu, and is a tribute to the Vincentian nuns who first made them in convents.
Nzuddi cookies are slightly flattened, golden in color, with a crumbly yet firm texture. The dough includes flour, chopped and whole almonds, honey, sugar, egg whites, cinnamon and a touch of baker’s ammonia.
According to tradition, it was the Vincentian nuns who brought Nzuddi to Messina after the devastating 1908 earthquake, offering them to displaced families as a gesture of comfort and devotion to the Madonna della Lettera, the protector of Messina.
Their texture and aroma make them perfect with a glass of sweet wine or with the classic Italian espresso.

Ciambelline (Cuddureddi): Sicilian Ring Biscuits for Breakfast
The Ciambelline from Messina, locally called Cuddureddi, are among the simplest and most loved Sicilian cookies for breakfast. Crunchy, fragrant and aromatic, these small rings are a timeless classic of Sicilian tradition.
The dough, made from shortcrust pastry flavored with vanilla and cinnamon, fills the kitchen with an irresistible aroma while baking. Their consistency makes them ideal for dipping into milk, tea or freshly brewed coffee.
A symbol of simplicity and conviviality, Ciambelline cookies remain one of the most authentic Sicilian treats, evoking the warm memory of traditional breakfasts.
