Caffè Corretto: Italy’s winter espresso with a splash of liquor

September 2026
Espresso Corretto

When winter arrives in Italy, there is a simple and traditional way to make espresso a little warmer and more intense: caffè corretto.
But what exactly is caffè corretto? It is an Italian espresso with a small amount of liquor, traditionally grappa, sambuca or brandy. A simple preparation rooted in Italian café culture, with interesting variations from one region to another.
The result is a bold, aromatic coffee where the intensity of espresso meets the distinctive character of the spirit.

Caffè Corretto: A True Italian tradition

Caffè corretto is part of Italy’s long-standing espresso culture.
Like many Italian coffee rituals, this preparation comes from the simple habit of turning an everyday espresso into a small moment of pleasure. Traditionally enjoyed during the colder months, caffè corretto brings together the warmth and aromas of a spirit with the rich character of freshly brewed espresso.
Today, it can be enjoyed at an Italian café after a meal or prepared at home when you are looking for something a little more intense than a classic espresso

Regional variations of Caffè corretto

The spirit used to “correct” the espresso can vary depending on local traditions and personal taste.

Caffè Corretto with Grappa

Caffè corretto with grappa is one of the most traditional versions, particularly in Northern Italy.

Grappa gives the espresso a bold and aromatic character, making this combination especially appealing to those who enjoy intense, dry flavours.

Simply add a small amount of grappa to freshly brewed espresso and serve immediately.

Caffè Corretto with Sambuca

Caffè corretto with sambuca is one of the best-known versions, both in Italy and beyond.
With its distinctive anise notes, sambuca makes the coffee more aromatic and slightly sweeter on the palate. It is a good choice if you prefer a more fragrant and rounded flavour compared with the sharper character of grappa.

Caffè Corretto with Brandy

Another popular option is caffè corretto with brandy. Brandy brings warm, smooth notes to the espresso, creating a particularly pleasant combination after a meal. As with the other variations, the amount of spirit should remain modest: espresso should always remain the star of the cup.

How to make caffè corretto

Making caffè corretto is incredibly simple. The most important thing is to start with a good-quality espresso.

Ingredients

  • 1 Italian espresso
  • 10–15 ml of grappa, sambuca or brandy
  • Sugar, optional

Method

  1. Brew the espresso. Use a quality Italian coffee blend and serve the espresso immediately, while it is still hot.
  2. Choose your spirit. Grappa, sambuca and brandy are among the most traditional choices.
  3. Add the spirit. Pour around 10–15 ml directly into the espresso.
  4. Stir if desired. Add sugar according to your taste and gently stir.
  5. Serve immediately. Caffè corretto is best enjoyed freshly prepared.

Caffè corretto is not meant to become an alcoholic cocktail.

The amount of spirit should be enough to complement and enhance the espresso without overpowering its aromas. A small splash is all you need.
